Publication of the article by Vodouhè et al. (2024): an in-depth analysis of the profitability and socio-economic dynamics of the bushmeat supply chain in Southern Benin, revealing the crucial economic, cultural, and environmental stakes of this vital activity for local communities and biodiversity conservation in West Africa.
Hunting and the bushmeat trade play an important economic role for many rural communities in West Africa. This study, conducted in Southern Benin, analyzed financial flows and the perceptions of the actors involved, including 120 hunters, traders, and consumers.
The results show that the profitability of this activity varies seasonally, with higher profits for hunters and traders during the dry season. Several factors influence this profitability, including household size, game availability, selling prices, distance to markets, and the regulations in place.
A key finding is that hunting is often perceived as a family heritage, with a strong involvement of youth who assist experienced hunters. Traders often benefit from higher profit margins thanks to an extended sales network, whereas hunters primarily sell their catch locally, which limits their earnings.
This complex socio-economic dynamic highlights the importance of considering local and cultural realities to develop effective strategies for sustainable wildlife management, reconciling conservation with the economic needs of local populations.
